For starter. You should try out the P mode which is more control over the camera than auto.. learn from there. Play with the ISO setting. For a jumping shot, if in normal sunny daylight, you could use ISO 200 to produce higher shutter speed to freeze the action. if at in door, you would need to apply flash. and ISO around 400. try it out!
